The one thing nobody cleans

You spend roughly a third of your life on a mattress, and for most households it is the only major furnishing that never gets cleaned. Sheets are washed weekly, the protector occasionally, and the mattress itself almost never — despite absorbing perspiration, skin cells, hair products and dust every single night. Over years that builds into staining, a stale smell that returns as soon as fresh bedding warms up, and a surface that becomes a comfortable home for dust mites.

Mattress cleaning is a straightforward, low-disruption service: a deep vacuum, targeted treatment of specific marks, and a controlled-moisture extraction that lifts embedded soil without soaking the core.

Mattress cleaning prices

Super-king and specialist mattresses are quoted individually. A standalone visit has an £80 minimum, so a single mattress on its own rarely makes sense as a lone booking — most clients clean every mattress in the house at once, or add a sofa or a room of carpet to the same visit. Heavily soiled items carry a 15% uplift, agreed in the quote beforehand.

How we clean a mattress

We confirm the size and construction first, because memory foam, hybrid, pocket-sprung and traditional mattresses tolerate different amounts of moisture. The sleeping surface, sides, piping and seams are deep vacuumed to remove dust, hair and debris, and the reverse side is cleaned too where the mattress can be safely turned. Specific marks are pre-treated with an appropriate product and given dwell time. Cleaning is then carried out with a hand tool that applies a controlled amount of solution and recovers it immediately, followed by a fast-dry recovery pass to pull as much moisture back out as possible. We finish by telling you exactly how long to leave it before bedding goes back on.

Drying and aftercare

Allow four to eight hours before making the bed, and longer in a cold or humid room. Keep the room ventilated and, if possible, stand the mattress on edge for part of the drying time. Never put a fitted sheet or a protector onto a mattress that is still damp — trapped moisture is exactly what causes odour. Afterwards, use a washable mattress protector, wash bedding weekly at a warm temperature, rotate the mattress every few months, and vacuum the surface when you change the sheets. A professional clean every twelve to eighteen months is sensible for most households, and more often for allergy sufferers or children prone to accidents.

How to prepare

Strip the bed completely before we arrive — sheets, protector, topper and pillows — so we can start immediately. Clear the floor around the bed and remove anything stored underneath. Tell us the mattress type, especially if it is memory foam or has a non-turn construction, and mention any existing damage or previous treatments. If you want a topper cleaned as well, say so when booking, as it is priced separately.

Honest limitations

We are honest about this one because expectations often run ahead of reality. Cleaning removes soiling from the fabric and the layers immediately beneath it. Old, deep-set body-fluid staining that has dried and oxidised over years will usually lighten but rarely disappear, and a lighter mark is not a failure — it is the limit of what chemistry can do to a set stain. Urine that has soaked through into the foam core, and the odour that comes with it, may improve considerably without being fully eliminated; in severe cases replacement is the honest answer. Memory foam cannot be wet-extracted aggressively without risking damage, so it receives a lower-moisture treatment with a correspondingly gentler result. We do not treat active bed-bug infestations — that requires a licensed pest control specialist, and cleaning should follow the treatment, not replace it.
